A 0.3 km² sandbank in the Pearl River that Britain and France took as concessions in 1859-61 after the Thirteen Hongs burned — four-fifths British, one-fifth French — and built up as a grid of consulates, banks and churches under banyans. More than 40 of the buildings are listed; the island is a national heritage site and a residential-consular district, not a theme park. Two churches you can enter, the White Swan Hotel (1983) at the south end, riverside promenades on three sides, and the calmest kilometre in central Guangzhou. It is two bridges from Huangsha metro.
