Passport needed

The high-speed station most foreign visitors actually arrive at, and, with the airport, one of the two places you are most likely to land in Nanjing. The city transport bureau gives the address as 98 Yulan Road, Yuhuatai District, and lists what runs through it: the Beijing-Shanghai, Shanghai-Wuhan-Chengdu, Nanjing-Hangzhou, Nanjing-Anhui and Nanjing-Hefei high-speed lines plus the Shanghai-Nanjing intercity railway. If you hold a foreign passport, the thing to do before you travel is the identity check: since 28 November 2023 China Railway lets you verify a foreign passport online on the 12306 site or app - fill in name, nationality and document number for automatic checking, or upload a photo of the passport page for manual checking - and you can still do it at a station window.

Before you goDo the passport verification before you need a ticket, not at the station. China Railway's own 2023 notice is clear that verification must pass before you can buy and travel, and that the automatic online route wants your name, nationality and document number - which means a mismatch with your passport gets discovered at the worst moment. Two more things nobody official documents. First, where the staffed window and the passport-verification counter actually are inside this station: no railway or station source publishes it, and we have not been able to confirm it on the ground. Second, the metro. Lines 1 and 3 clearly serve the station - the metro operator's own reply to a councillor mentions changing from S1 here to line 1 or 3 - but we could not find an official sentence listing every line that stops here, the metro's own website does not respond. Line 6 did open on 29 September 2026: it starts here and runs through onto S1, so you stay on the train to the airport. Finally the naming trap: 'Nanjing Station' and 'Nanjing South Station' are different stations about 13 km apart (both are on metro lines 1 and 3), and the transport bureau says the older one mainly handles T, K and Z services.
