The one place in the city that explains why the south bank looks the way it does. In 1891 Chongqing became the first inland treaty port; the British trader Archibald Little built his factory, warehouses and villas on this slope at Ma'anshan in 1896, and the city spent 2020-2023 restoring eight protected buildings and the ruins around them into a hillside park with a river terrace. Before you goTwo different things share the name: the park is a free, open-air hillside you can walk into any time, with a café strip and a river terrace; the exhibition hall inside is small — the 2023 rules admit 15 people per slot, Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-17:00, booked 1-7 days ahead on a WeChat mini-program that asks for a Chinese ID number for every visitor. Nothing published since says how a foreign passport holder books, and the city's July 2024 orders scrapping reservations do not cover this hall (it is not on the city's register of museums and the park is not an A-level site, so the 2023 mini-program rule is still the only published one). Walk in and ask at the hall door first; if it is full, the buildings and the terrace are the point anyway. The hall is shut on Mondays.
