The one above-ground imperial tomb in China you can walk into: Wang Jian, a soldier who made himself emperor of Former Shu, died in 918 and was buried in a brick-vaulted chamber built above ground under a mound, excavated in 1942-43 and open since. You stand inside the vault, in front of the stone coffin platform whose sides carry the 24 musicians (the only complete carved orchestra of the Tang court, every instrument identifiable), and the seated statue of Wang Jian himself, the only surviving portrait sculpture of a Chinese emperor. ¥20 for the tomb, the garden around it free and open early to late.

Beat the crowds
Never busy — a school group at most. The vault is small: if a group is inside, sit in the garden for ten minutes and go in after them.
Language
Bilingual labels in the exhibition hall; the vault itself is signed in Chinese; no English audio guide published.
