The small Ming temple to the goddess Bixia Yuanjun beside the Water Cube — the 'north peak' of the five temples that ringed the Ming and Qing city, 500-odd years old, and the one building on the Olympic site that predates it. The story every guide tells is true in outline: the 2008 plan put the Water Cube on top of it, the temple stayed and the Cube's footprint shifted north, which is why the bubble box sits where it does. Run since then as a branch of the Beijing Folk Customs Museum, free, 8:30-16:30 — a five-minute courtyard of red walls in a plaza of steel.
