Where might Alipay or WeChat Pay fail with a linked foreign card?

Depends

Merchant QR codes usually work. Paying a person, red packets, top-ups and some mini-programs or transit codes don't.

What it depends on

  • IfMerchant QR or till payment code→ thenUsually works. Scan the code that matches your app's logo; if declined, try the other wallet or a card.
  • IfPersonal QR, red packet, transfer, balance top-up→ thenNot supported on international cards. Ask for the merchant code or pay cash.
  • IfTransit QR or a third-party mini-program→ thenIt depends on the city and mini-program. Try it, with a transit card or cash as backup. Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen officially accept contactless Visa and Mastercard at metro gates; Chongqing accepts only UnionPay.
  • IfPaying with the physical card (tap or swipe)→ thenHotels, airports, big malls, staffed ticket windows at key metro stations and scenic-spot ticket windows are where foreign cards were pushed. At small shops, stalls, markets and in taxis, use a wallet or cash.
  • IfEverything declines suddenly→ thenIt is probably your bank's fraud block. Call the bank and switch to your second card.

A linked foreign card is meant for scanning a business's merchant QR or showing your payment code at the till. This works at most places, but the merchant category, acquirer setup, wallet risk checks or your issuer can still cause a decline. Scan the QR with the logo of the app you are using.

Where it stops, per WeChat Pay's own help page: international cards “do not support certain features such as red packets and money transfers”. From traveller experience (not a first-party list), that also covers the personal collection QRs (个人收款码) that small stalls and drivers sometimes hold up, wallet balance top-up and withdrawal, and savings or insurance products; Alipay's international-card terms are reported to be similar. If a vendor shows a personal code, ask for the merchant code, or pay cash.

Results vary for mini-programs and transit. Traveller guides report foreign-card refusals in some ticketing and delivery mini-programs. One 2026 travel blog says Alipay and WeChat transit codes worked in every major city it tried. Direct contactless card payment at metro gates has official confirmation in Beijing (Visa and Mastercard), Guangzhou (Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB at every station since 12 October 2025, about 9,000 gates; PBoC Guangdong, 13 October 2025) and Shenzhen (every gate on all 17 lines and 432 stations since 10 September 2026, with contactless and small no-PIN payments enabled; Shenzhen Transport Bureau, 14 September 2026), and Shanghai (UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB contactless cards at the gates for Tap to Ride; Shanghai Municipal Government English site, August 2026). Chongqing accepts only UnionPay QuickPass cards (since 6 February 2023, per the metro operator); no Visa or Mastercard tap has been announced. We found no official statement for Nanjing (checked September 2026). Blog reports for other cities remain unconfirmed. There is no official national list. Try it, but keep another way to pay.

Your issuer may also decline a cross-border online transaction. As with linking the card, tell the bank you are travelling and carry a second card from another bank.

New fallback since December 2025: China UnionPay's “Nihao China” app links overseas UnionPay, Visa and Mastercard cards and, per UnionPay's own pages, pays across UnionPay, WeChat Pay and Alipay acceptance, inside 200+ platforms including 12306, Ctrip and Meituan (300+ was the launch figure), on metro in 43 cities and buses in about 1,760 county-level areas. These are UnionPay's claims and were not independently tested for this entry.

If your card just will not bind, there are two official fallbacks that skip card binding altogether, and both are still being pushed in 2026. Alipay's Travel Wallet: per the Beijing government's English site (April 2026), you open it inside the GO BEIJING (入京通) app, fund it by cross-border remittance, and spend in the mainland with no card linking and no transaction fees; users from 40 countries and regions could open one at launch. The official page does not say whether a leftover balance can be refunded or whether it expires. Bank of Shanghai's Tour Card (旅行通卡): open it in the bank's mini-program inside Alipay or WeChat and top it up with your own international card; the bank's account, as relayed by the Shanghai state-assets commission in 2022, is that it works on metros, buses, over 3 million restaurants and nearly 100,000 convenience stores and supermarkets. The Bank of Shanghai agreement hosted on Alipay (an older version) says: a 5% service fee on each top-up; no transfers or red packets from the card; when the service period ends the balance is refunded to your original card at the exchange rate of the day; you pay by scanning a merchant's collection code. That older agreement gives a 90-day term; we have not read the current terms, so check the agreement in the mini-program when you open the card.

With the physical card, the safe bets are the places the government told banks to equip. The State Council's 2024 payment guideline asked local governments to list large shopping districts, tourist sites and resorts, museums, entertainment venues, hotels, transport hubs and hospitals, and asked banks to upgrade card terminals there to take foreign cards. The central bank's own version for visitors, from a July 2024 briefing: airports, hotels and big shopping districts take foreign cards; staffed ticket windows at key metro stations have a card terminal; scenic spots keep a staffed ticket window that takes bank cards. Visa and Mastercard work where their logos are shown, and shops with a terminal generally take UnionPay.

How far that reached, in the one city we found with numbers: by the end of March 2025, 66,000 merchants and 96,000 terminals in Shanghai took both domestic and foreign cards, and about 2,000 Shanghai taxis could take a foreign card (PBoC Shanghai Head Office, April 2025). We found no national count (checked October 2026).

Small shops, street stalls, wet markets and small restaurants are not on those lists, and some have no card terminal at all. Before you eat at a stall or shop at a market, check that Alipay or WeChat Pay works for you, or carry some cash. Taxis are the same: the central bank's briefing says drivers were asked to carry small change, so cash or a wallet is the reliable way to pay.
