Will Google, WhatsApp and Instagram work on a travel eSIM in China?
Depends how the plan routes traffic: a travel eSIM bought abroad usually works, hotel Wi-Fi and a local SIM don't.
What it depends on
- IfTravel eSIM from Airalo, Nomad, Holafly or Trip.com→ thenTheir help pages say Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Maps work on cellular data; do not add a VPN on top.
- IfSaily, CMLink, 3HK, Ubigi or another provider→ thenAsk for a written answer about the specific China plan before buying; reports vary.
- IfHotel, café or airport Wi-Fi→ thenThe usual mainland blocks apply. Switch back to eSIM data for blocked apps.
- IfMainland local SIM or mainland-carrier eSIM→ thenFiltered; you would need a VPN installed before arrival.
- IfYou need ChatGPT→ thenNot supported from the mainland, Hong Kong or Macau per OpenAI; may refuse and carries account risk.
Travel eSIMs sold outside the mainland use roaming. Many providers route traffic through Hong Kong, Singapore or their home network, outside mainland filtering. Providers choose the route and can change it, so roaming alone does not guarantee access. Nomad's help centre says its eSIM is not a VPN, does not provide VPN-style encryption and should not be used with a VPN on top.
Airalo's help centre says “a VPN is NOT required” for its China, Regional Asia and Global packages. Nomad lists Google, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, X, Gmail and YouTube. Holafly calls its service an “integrated VPN”, though the mechanism is roaming; Trip.com's editorial guide also says blocked apps work. These sellers speak only for their own plans. For Saily, CMLink, 3HK, Ubigi or another provider, get a written answer about the specific China plan before buying. Reports about CMLink are mixed.
Most hotel, café and airport Wi-Fi uses a mainland connection, with the usual blocks, even if your eSIM is still installed. Switch back to eSIM data for blocked apps. Mainland local SIMs have the same restrictions.
ChatGPT has a separate restriction. OpenAI does not list mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau as supported regions and says access from unsupported regions can lead to account suspension. Even if the connection works, don't rely on it: your account may be at risk under OpenAI's policy.
Reliability varies. Firsthand reports from 2025–2026 describe six weeks on Airalo without a VPN, Holafly working across Yunnan and patchy Nomad service for some testers. Speeds drop on smaller carriers' networks, and support answers change. Check the provider's help page in the week before you fly.
Hotspot and tethering rules are per plan: Holafly's unlimited China plan caps tethering at 1 GB a day (product page, read September 2026); check the terms of the plan you buy rather than assuming.
